Megève Ski Area Overview

The Évasion Mont Blanc ski area encompasses five resorts — Megève, Saint-Gervais, Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, Combloux, and La Giettaz — linked by a modern lift network to create a vast and wonderfully varied ski domain. With the unmistakable silhouette of Mont Blanc as a constant backdrop, the skiing here is as beautiful as it is extensive.

The resort suits all levels admirably. Megève's terrain is particularly celebrated by intermediate skiers for its wide, sweeping runs through forested slopes and open alpine meadows — some of the most scenic and enjoyable piste skiing in the Alps.

For more advanced skiers, the higher altitude terrain above Rochebrune and Jaillet offers excellent off-piste opportunities, particularly following fresh snowfall. The resort's extensive tree skiing is also outstanding.

Megève has a sophisticated history as the birthplace of modern ski resort culture, and it wears that heritage beautifully — with exceptional instructors, well-maintained pistes, and a ski school that has been nurturing talent for nearly a century.

FAQ

What makes Megève feel different from other luxury ski resorts?
faq icons (2)

Megève was designed from the outset as a destination rather than a resort — a distinction that still defines it a century later. The Rothschild family created it in the 1920s as a French alternative to St Moritz, and the philosophy of the place has never really changed: skiing is one part of the experience, not the whole of it. The medieval village at its heart predates the ski industry entirely, which gives Megève a warmth and authenticity that purpose-built resorts simply cannot manufacture. The cobblestone streets, the church square, the horse-drawn carriages in the evening — none of it is contrived. It's a town that happens to be surrounded by excellent skiing, rather than a ski resort that happens to have a village.

How does the skiing compare — is it world-class or is Megève more of a lifestyle resort?
faq icons (2)

This is the honest question, and it deserves an honest answer. Megève is not the resort for guests whose sole priority is maximum vertical, guaranteed powder, and the most extreme terrain in the Alps. The altitude is lower than many rivals, which means snow conditions can vary more noticeably in warm spells. What the skiing does offer — and offers exceptionally well — is variety, beauty, and an experience that is genuinely enjoyable rather than relentlessly demanding. The 445km of the Évasion Mont Blanc area includes wonderful tree skiing, sweeping panoramic runs, and excellent intermediate cruising with Mont Blanc as a constant backdrop. For guests who want to ski well, ski often, and return to the village feeling exhilarated rather than exhausted, Megève is outstanding.

What is the snow reliability like, and when is the best time to visit?
faq icons (2)

Megève's lower altitude — the village sits at 1,113m — means it is more susceptible to warm weather than higher-altitude rivals. January and February are the most reliable months for guaranteed good conditions across the full ski area. That said, the ski area extends to 2,350m, and the upper lifts hold snow well throughout the core season. March can be excellent — bright, warm days and still-solid snow at altitude — and is often our preferred recommendation for families with children. We monitor conditions closely and will always advise on timing as part of the booking process. Early December and April can be more variable, and we'll flag this honestly if your dates fall in those windows.

What is the dining scene actually like — is it as good as people say?
faq icons (2)

Yes, and possibly better. Megève has more Michelin-starred restaurants per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in the Alps, and the standard across the board — starred and non-starred alike — is exceptional. The mountain restaurants are some of the finest in France, offering serious cuisine in extraordinary settings. In the village, evenings range from cosy Savoyard bistros to candlelit gastronomic experiences that would hold their own in Paris or London. We have strong relationships with the best tables in the resort and make reservations for our guests as standard — something that matters considerably during peak weeks when the best spots book out months in advance.

How close is Megève to Geneva, and can we arrive by helicopter?
faq icons (2)

Megève is approximately one hour from Geneva Airport — one of the closest major alpine resorts to an international hub, which makes it uniquely well-suited to long weekends and short breaks. The road transfer is straightforward and scenic, and the approach into the valley is one of the most beautiful drives in the Alps. For guests who want to maximise their time in the resort, helicopter is an excellent option: Megève has its own heliport within the resort, and flight time from Geneva is around 15 minutes. We work with trusted helicopter operators and can incorporate this seamlessly into your arrival and departure logistics.

Is Megève right for children, or is it more of an adult destination?
faq icons (2)

Megève is one of the most naturally family-suited resorts in the Alps — not because it has been designed with children in mind, but because it has always welcomed them as part of a complete family experience. The village is largely car-free and beautifully safe. The ski school is one of the most established in France, with instructors who are experienced at teaching children from age three upwards. The lower altitude means milder temperatures that are considerably more comfortable for small children than the sharper cold of higher resorts. And the range of off-slope activities — sleigh rides, the rink, snowshoeing, cooking classes, and more — means younger guests are never at a loose end. Megève works as well for a family of six as it does for a couple celebrating an anniversary.

Megève has long been one of the most beloved family ski resorts in France, and it's not difficult to understand why. The resort's gentle terrain, car-free village centre, and exceptional ski school create the ideal environment for children to discover and fall in love with winter mountains.

The École du Ski Français (ESF) in Megève is one of the most established and respected ski schools in France, with dedicated children's areas and instructors who have a genuine gift for teaching young skiers. The resort's lower altitude also means mild temperatures and comfortable conditions for little ones throughout the season.

Whether your children are learning their very first snowplough or building confidence on the forest runs, we'll help you pick the right lessons, timings, and childcare arrangements - ideal if you're planning family ski holidays in Megève.
